Description
Iron meteorites are meteorites that consist overwhelmingly of an iron–nickel alloy known as meteoriciron that usually consists of two mineral phases: kamacite and taenite. Iron meteorites originate from cores of planets.
The Green River Formation comprises several basins formed as part of the uplifting of the Rocky Mountains during the Lower Teritary. These outcrops that occur in Wyoming, Colorado and Utah are a Laggerstatten in the truest sense, with an enormously diverse faunal and floral assemblage of fossils exhibiting remarkable preservation.
The connection of this fossil rich region and meteorites is incredible and unique. The meteorite fragments were found in 2014. The very curious note about these meteorites is that other fragments of identical elemental composition have been found in California. This would make the strewn field that spanned states. Incredible in every way.
