The Gila monster is a species of venomous lizard native to the Southwestern United States and the northwestern New Mexican state of Sonora. It is a heavy, typically slow-moving reptile, up to 56 centimeters long, and it is the only venomous lizard native to the United States.
This legally acquired, captive bred, animal died of natural causes and is not available to states where they naturally occur. The Gila monster lives primarily in Arizona and Mexico, the extreme southeastern corner of California, the southern tip of Nevada, and the southwestern corners of Utah and New Mexico.
